Quick Answer

How do you become a qualified JIB electrician in UK construction?

To become a JIB-qualified electrician, you complete a 4-year Level 3 Electrical Installations apprenticeship (combining on-site work with college training), then sit the AM2 practical assessment — the final gate to JIB Gold Card status. Once passed, you register with the JIB to receive your ECS Gold Card. This is the industry-standard qualification accepted on all UK construction sites. JIB Gold Card electricians earn £20–£32/hour in 2026, and are in severe shortage nationally.

The Route to JIB Gold Card — Step by Step

There is one primary route to becoming a qualified JIB electrician: the apprenticeship pathway. There are no significant shortcuts — the AM2 practical assessment requires genuine installation competence.

1

Find an electrical apprenticeship

Ongoing

Electrical apprenticeships are available through electrical contractors, M&E subcontractors, and larger construction firms. Apprentices split time between on-site work (with an approved employer) and college training. The government apprenticeship finder and JIB's own apprenticeship register are starting points. Most apprentices start at 16–19 but there is no age ceiling.

2

Complete Level 3 Electrical Installations training

Years 1–4

The college-based component covers: electrical theory and principles, BS 7671 Wiring Regulations (18th Edition), health and safety, installation methods, inspection and testing, and fault diagnosis. This is typically delivered as day-release or block-release at an FE college. City & Guilds Level 3 (2365) or the equivalent EAL qualification is standard.

3

Gain on-site installation experience

Years 1–4

The employer-based component of the apprenticeship provides hands-on installation experience under the supervision of qualified electricians. This covers containment, wiring, terminations, distribution boards, earthing, and progressively more complex installation work as competence grows. This experience is essential preparation for the AM2.

4

Sit the AM2 assessment

End of Year 4

The AM2 (Achievement Measurement 2) is sat on completion of the apprenticeship at an approved assessment centre. It involves completing a practical installation to a specification, inspection and testing, and fault diagnosis — all within a set timeframe. Pass rate is high for well-prepared candidates. Failure requires a resit.

5

Apply for JIB Gold Card

Post AM2

On passing the AM2, you apply to the JIB for your ECS Gold Card. This is the qualification recognised by all construction sites, M&E contractors, and principal contractors in the UK. The Gold Card confirms you as a fully qualified JIB electrician. Card is valid for 3 years — renew via the JIB/ECS renewal process.
